Before Dance of the Two Moons became a signature event, there was a simple gathering rooted in purpose. An earlier fundraiser, called Winterhawk, brought the community together in support of Indian Health Care Resource Center of Tulsa (IHCRC). It was humble, but deeply meaningful. People showed up not for the experience, but for the mission. That spirit of generosity and belief laid the foundation for what would come next.
In 1991, that same spirit gave rise to the first Dance of the Two Moons. It was a modest beginning, raising around $6,000, but it marked the start of something lasting. What mattered most was not the amount raised, but what it represented, a community willing to invest in better health, stronger families, and a future shaped by access to care.
As the clinic grew, so did the event. Over the years, IHCRC expanded its services, increased access to care, and responded to the evolving needs of Native families across the region. From its early days with a small team working to identify unmet health needs, the clinic has grown into an organization serving thousands of patients each year.
Dance of the Two Moons has grown alongside that journey. What began as a small fundraiser has become a powerful tradition, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to support programs, services, and initiatives that directly impact patient care. The event has evolved in scale and experience, but its purpose has remained unchanged.
You can see that evolution reflected in the themes over the years. From early mission-focused themes centered on children and the future, the event expanded into creative and immersive experiences. Guests have stepped into different eras like the Roaring ‘20s, the 50s, and the 70s, and enjoyed themed evenings inspired by Sci-Fi, Mardi Gras, and even a Red Carpet Fashion Show. Each theme brought something new, but all shared the same purpose, bringing people together in support of the mission.
This year, that evolution comes full circle. As Indian Health Care Resource Center of Tulsa celebrates its 50th anniversary, Dance of the Two Moons is returning to its roots. This year’s celebration places the focus back on what matters most, the organization, the community, and the culture that has guided the clinic for five decades.
At its core, Dance of the Two Moons has always been about community. Each year, supporters, partners, and friends come together not only to celebrate, but to connect. The event brings together culture, storytelling, and shared purpose, creating a space where the impact of the clinic’s work is both seen and felt. It is an opportunity to reflect on the lives touched, the progress made, and the work still ahead.
It is also a moment to recognize that none of this happens alone. Every milestone in the clinic’s history has been shaped by people who chose to show up, whether as patients, staff, partners, or supporters. The continued success of Dance of the Two Moons reflects that same commitment. It is a reminder that when a community comes together around a shared purpose, meaningful change is possible.
This year, that meaning carries even greater significance. As Indian Health Care Resource Center of Tulsa celebrates its 50th anniversary, Dance of the Two Moons stands as a reflection of five decades of growth, resilience, and impact, and a commitment to the future.
